Next version - status update

Important detail - current commercial license includes 12 months of free code updates, which means if you buy 1.0.1 now you will get free upgrade to 2.0 (standard) when it is released.

June 28,
I just put a couple of samples of what will be available with ActiveWidgets 2.0:
http://www.activewidgets.com/preview/2.0/examples/dialog.htm
http://www.activewidgets.com/preview/2.0/examples/controls.htm
Please don't forget that this is 'work in progress' and not even alpha yet.
All that does not mean that the focus shifts away from the grid control - the grid (or grids - standard, extended, tree grid etc.) is still central part of the product. But as we need all the small controls as cell editors anyway - why not to release them for form building :-)
Together with your favorite AJAX transport library this should make an interesting application platform...

Very interesting indeed. Thanks for the update. I just would have liked a better example of how the grid would look like with the editing capabilities etc.
Now I can see why it's taking you a while to develop this, and however cool it does look like, the grid is my main focus and interest at this time, so move your ass ;)

Nooo no no no, Hey ! wait a second.. Are you telling us that now we need to fight with tabs / footers / Fonts ... etc..
Show me a Mr. Gates autorization for doing so.
I am sure you panned those things "long time ago" with a unique intention, destroy our brains, anyway, so cool ..so pervese.
Thanks
Carlos
July 6,
Microsoft itself started this long time ago with OWA (Outlook Web Access), then Oddpost/Yahoo, then Google, now everyone can make a web application :-)
So it is not rocket science anymore.

Any paging in the new release?

Can I suggest allowing a hooking of event handlers?
Keyboard event hooking for instance. Make any hook handler return a bool to indicate whether the default handling for that event should additionally be processed or not.
This is very simple, and extremely useful, and the only way to handle things like keyboard events for special key processing without having to reimplement the default keyboard processing.

and what about the documentation??? :))
Also, could you please clarify whether v1.0.1 license holders will be entitled to free upgrade to v2.0 standard or professional?
Will the renewed grid control be backwards-compatible with 1.0?
Cheers,
Sergei

And man, if this isn't the end of pagination - take that thing and go to the next level. Go ahead and grab 20 extra rows so that single clicks are immediate. Start doing some kinds of AJAX to make scrolling seem more fluid. Oh lord, very very cool.

I would like top offer a suggestion, if possible. one thing that I would be really interested in seeing being added is the ability to add right click menu/options for your grid control. Your grid has made things for my web application easier and better. Keep up the good work.

Will it be a open alpha test or a closed one?
July 8,
Marc:
version 2.0 will have simple 'classic' paging.
Adrien de Croy:
yes, the event/action module is very much enhanced in 2.0
Sergei:
free upgrade from 1.0/1.0.1 is to 2.0 standard. New grid will not be backwards compatible, but two libraries will run side-by -side on one page if necessary.
Frank:
I will try to do virtual paging (a la Rico) after 2.0, maybe 3.0 :-)
David D:
Menu/toolbar controls are in the plans, but this is also after 2.0
Alpha will be available to all commercial customers (send me email), beta - open.

July 8,
Alex,
Noticed you avoided the question on documentation :)))
Anyways,

at least we are hoping it will be easy to migrate the project to v2, given there will be adequate docu...(shutting up now).
Cheers,
Sergei
July 8,
:-))
I hope it will be easy to migrate, the API is mostly the same (but not backwards compatible in exact sense that you can replace the library and still run your code).

Dude, with all the crap (well, cool crap) I've extended with the current grid, I can't wait for v2.
Btw, I already have a right click custom context menu running on my grids. Written some cool "History Navigation" to take you back to previous instances of the grid (I load using table.request)
mwha....mwha...mwhahahaha
Btw, Alex, go all out and include those features in v2. Come now man!

What will the licensing options be for the "professional" version? Are you planning to lock out open source developers who just want our apps to be able to run on Safari & Konqueror?

Hi Alex..
I am not realy good in DHTML, but I manage PHP & SQL.. Therfore the grid is great for my apps (even so poorly slow - would the <table> be faster than <div> ???).
Anyway... it makes me go across great idea... Your stylish controls are simply great, but changing their look&feel is a bit problematical. Can we make together simple Database or file driven config file to setup colours or other (skinlike) things ??

Hello Alex
very impressive for me & my application.
Just want to ask about compatibility with Firefox or Mozilla? I can't see the same think like IE 6.
Firefox 1.0.3 - 1.0.6 & Mozilla 1.7.8

July 29,
ASJ - it already does it's called CSS
July 29,
I know... but for the LAMA users just using those aps it might be a great idea to let them customize the grid with even no thought of the code, because not every PC user knows how CSS works... :D:D:D
That was what the thought of Database driven skin setup was..
Think of me as a programer.. no problem for me to make a CSS skin or o customize the one already existing (but even for me it is sometimes bit hard to navigate through all the .active...something)
And think of a secretary in your company, that is allways going to you asking for the grid to be blue to fit the blue app screen or be winXP-Like to let her feel as working with real win app...
She then would like to have some way to setup the header color, the grid color, the selected line color.. even some conditional formating...
Getting in now ?
;-)

copy and paste function!
copy and paste function!

URL CLICKABLE CELL where url is taken from mysql or other sql

August 1,
Micha, thats already possible with the current version of the grid. Figure it out ;)

August 1,
It can be useful to put functions like "sum" or "avarage" of rows which will be place results into footers for the lazy coders.
Also this kind of structure with group can be also needed by many:
FIRM 1
NUMBER DATE
NUMBER DATE
NUMBER DATE
-- SUB-TOTAL
FIRM 2
NUMBER DATE
NUMBER DATE
-- SUB-TOTAL
TOTAL

August 2,
Cem,
What you are asking for is a spreadsheet, this is a data grid. There are other companies that make web spreadsheets, I don't feel that this control needs to be a spreadsheet as well as being a great database grid. JMHO

August 5,
I don't see a problem with there been a spread sheet using the frame work but I agree with jim here that the grid shouldn't be it
August 9,
almost beta time?

hi AcidRaZor,
Could you possibly post your codes with context menu.... i'm having a hard time figuring it out...
i hope you could help me.

August 18,
Took me a while myself. I'll try and get a simple example of it online soon. Will post an example too. First have to find where I put the code. :D

August 18,
These are really nice controls. I have started working with old version for AJAX and it is working nice. It has given tremendous performance with this grid.
I'm really happy with tis control.
Suggestion: Once we have more than 1000 records it takes too much time to reload table. In this case if something can be done that couple of pages with records will be loaded first then rest of pages will be loaded so user need not to look at white screen for long time.
Thanks
Pat Murphy
September 19,
Pat, the new version 2.0 with virtual rendering will do what you want. Alex posted a link to a demo of a grid with 1000 rows and it's very fast.

September 19,
Some clear and concise doumentation explaining how to put a URL into a cell.
Heck, some clear and concise documentaiton of -anything-.
September 22,
hi, can the datagrid load with virtual rendering taking the data from asp or php?
Eric
September 23,
Yes but I think you have to implement that bit
