v2b3 "mixed" checkboxes on load

I can set my checkboxes to different values when I load my data not asynchronously into an array, but I can't figure out how to do the same thing when the data comes from an asynchronous xml table. The checkboxes get loaded with value "mixed".
Can anyone help?
