unselecting a row?

Is there a flag or function to default the selection behaviour so that when you click on the pre-selected row, it unselects it.

No. Maybe if you allow multiple selection then Ctrl-click will do it?

It still keeps the row ID, of the row that were deselected. So you won't know if the row were selected or de-selected.
