Sorting with XML

I really like using XML as the way to populate the grid. Unfortunately most of the examples on how to do stuff involve using arrays. I have imbedded links in my XML using <a> etc. The links work great. Is there a way I can use the clean text from the field to sort. I have seen examples that fix this using arrays but I would prefer to use XML.
