What is a cell template?

Throughout the forum and documentation there is often talk about a cell template or other types of templates.

I do not understand the concept of template at all. What is a cell template and how do you use it?

The template is the prototype of the actual object which will be created on demand (possibly multiple instances). Templates usually contain links to data models properties (functions instead of static content).
