Retrieving edited data

Yet another question for today. What procedure is to be followed to allow either a CGI type application (such as perl scripts or ASP pages), or someother middle ware type application to access data from an edited instance of AW.UI.Grid?
I can see how to load data from either CSV files or XML files into a grid, how to access the value of individual cells (getCellData) but not how to get the data off of Javascript/DHTML into another place. My potential use for these controls would be as a web based user interface in a 3 tier application.
