obj.element is NULL or not a

obj.setProperty("selection/index", 0); 
obj.setAttribute("tabIndex", 1);
obj.element().focus();
document.write(obj);
  when i write this i get is Null error.
all i want is the table to get on focus with the first item selected when i refresh the page...
